Amman – Al-Ghad – According to information published on the “Russia Today” website, the British Francis Crick company has developed a type of vaccine that “self-destructs moles” without the need for surgery.
Small skin moles are very common and appear when clusters of pigment-producing cells called melanocytes grow.
There is a rare skin condition caused by genetic mutations in utero, called congenital melanocytic nevus syndrome (CMN), in which 80% of the body is covered with large or itchy moles, increasing the risk of developing more severe types. Skin cancer.
The scientists developed the vaccine in collaboration with Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), which treats young people with the condition.
Experimental mice with CMN received injections containing a treatment that blocked a mutated gene in mole cells called NRAS, and after 48 hours, the cells self-destructed.
The scientists tested it on whole skin cells and sections from children with CMN, leading to the same results, published in the journal Investigating Dermatology.
Professor Veronica Kinsler of GOSH said: “CMN is physically and mentally challenging for people with the condition and their families, as gene therapy not only destroys mole cells in the laboratory by itself, but these results suggest that a future treatment could eradicate moles in humans, but require additional testing before administering it to patients. We were able to deliver them to the skin in “requires testing”.
Scientists hope the treatment, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), will soon begin clinical trials in humans.
